Child Sexual Exploitation Conference
Child Sexual Exploitation Week – Young Peoples Conference Report
Upon arrival at the Young People’s Child Sexual Exploitation Conference on the 11th November 2015 we were greeted by an intriguing production of the play named Chelsea’s Choice. The fantastic actors depicted a both serious and upsetting true story, displaying to all viewers just how important it is for us to protect, understand and educate ourselves so we will be capable enough to recognise sexual exploitation and report it to solve the problem.
The multiple workshops available to us all displayed the dangers and defined the different devious ways sexual predators can abuse the vulnerabilities of young people. Furthermore we were also shown what support we could receive from the many companies as such as ‘Say Something’ offering a help line to those in need. It was demonstrated how we as individuals could make small changes to our lives to prevent us being exploited. We even had the opportunity to contact a member of staff -from a helpline-with a scenario, to which they responded, allowing us to see just how quickly and easily you can receive advice to prevent and solve severe issues.
We then listened to Lorin Lafave, the mother of Breck Bednar a 15 year old boy who was killed by a sexual predator after months of grooming through online gaming. After hearing such a tragic story we ended our day by feeding back to professionals and organisations recommending ways to prevent such attacks happening. All Hallows suggested that social media take more responsibility for the safety of young people by changing their websites so it is automatically set to private setting when an account is created.
Overall the valuable information displayed the importance of highlighting this issue in lessons at school and ensuring people are aware of how to prevent and seek help in prevention of sexual exploitation.
